Mission

The Downtown Eastside Community Land Trust (DTES CLT) is a non-profit organization dedicated to transferring privately owned properties in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside into community ownership. By removing housing from the speculative market, the DTES CLT ensures that profits are reinvested into the buildings and that benefits stay within the community. Their approach prioritizes holistic housing centred on tenant needs, permanently affordable rents, and long-term stewardship of property as envisioned by the local community. Their housing model integrates tenant-based initiatives, facilitated by our community partners at the DTES SRO Collaborative, to ensure safety, stability, and tenant leadership in each building.

Working towards decolonizing the housing system is a core tenet of the organization; the DTES CLT is governed by a majority-Indigenous board and guided by Elders and a Tenants Advisory Committee. The Executive Director, Andy Bond, is a long-time DTES housing practitioner with over 20 years of experience managing, renovating, and developing non-profit housing in the Downtown Eastside.

Vision

The Downtown Eastside Community Land Trust (DTES CLT) is working to acquire, renovate, and develop deeply affordable community-owned housing in Vancouver’s Downtown Eastside. Their goal is to secure at-risk SRO buildings to ensure long-term affordability, build better housing, and strengthen community control over local housing.

In the Accelerator, they will

Expand their understanding of potential funding models for acquisition and new construction, and develop a project plan to share with community members and funders, including topics ranging from project financing to design.
