Description

The two-storey East Bayfront Community Centre is located in the base of the Aqualuna condominium development as part of the East Bayfront Precinct Plan. The new facility features a double gymnasium, multi-purpose spaces including a dance studio, and a community kitchen beneath two 17- and 18-storey towers.

Complexity / Collaboration

The community centre was negotiated between the municipality and the developer as a benefit in the Section 37 agreement established through the rezoning process. Public art and affordable housing provisions were also included as benefits in the agreement. The publicly-owned site was sold to the developer under the condition that the City would retain ownership of the strata parcel of land designated for the community centre.

User Interaction/Partnership Framework

City of Toronto Parks, Forestry & Recreation will operate the community recreation facility while the developer will be responsible for the management of the residential component.

Costs / Funding

The City paid $22 million to the developer to design and deliver both the shell and fit-out of the community centre. This funding was sourced from the 2019 Council Approved Capital Budgets and future year commitments for Waterfront Revitalization Initiative and PF&R., debt, and Development Charges.
