Mission

Total Communication Environment (TCE) is a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting individuals with multiple disabilities and complex communication needs. Based in Ottawa, TCE provides community-based services that prioritize dignity, inclusion, and person-centred care. With a strong focus on creating environments where individuals can express themselves and thrive, TCE is known for its compassionate, innovative approach to care and its deep commitment to enhancing quality of life for the people it serves.

Project

Total Communication Environment (TCE) is developing the PATHS Project, a new model of inclusive housing in Ottawa for individuals with developmental disabilities. PATHS stands for Person-Centred Accessible Home for Six and focuses on creating a fully accessible, technology-enabled bungalow that supports safety, independence, and quality of life. This redevelopment will transform an existing TCE property into a modern home designed around the changing needs of the people we support. The home will integrate smart technology, accessible design features, and shared community spaces to foster inclusion and connection. Through this project, TCE aims to demonstrate how thoughtful design, person-centred planning, and community collaboration can create long-term, sustainable housing solutions that truly reflect the principles of inclusion and belonging outlined in Ontario’s Journey to Belonging framework.

In the Accelerator, they will

Aim to expand their network of contacts to strengthen both the development and sustainability of the PATHS Project. Specifically, they hope to connect with philanthropic partners and foundations that can support their capital campaign and long-term sustainability; government representatives and program officers at CMHC, MCCSS, and other funding bodies to explore capital funding opportunities and ensure alignment with policy priorities; technical experts and consultants in accessible housing design, construction, and smart-home technology to inform the project’s planning and design phases; peer organizations and sector leaders engaged in innovative housing projects, to share best practices, lessons learned, and collaborative opportunities; and community advocates and local stakeholders who can support engagement, raise awareness, and foster community acceptance of the new home. By developing these contacts, they aim to secure the expertise, funding, and partnerships necessary to bring PATHS from concept to completion.
